IRCC announced a new humanitarian pathway for people affected by the conflict in Sudan:

To be eligible, applicants must be a child of any age, grandchild, parent, grandparent, or sibling of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who is living in Canada. Their family connection in Canada will also need to agree to support them and help them build their new life in Canada.

IRCC announced temporary immigration measures to support family members of Canadian and Permanent Residents living in Gaza:

Eligible applicants include the spouse, common-law partner, child (regardless of age), grandchild, sibling, parent or grandparent of a Canadian anchor, as well as their immediate family members (spouse, common-law partner, dependent child, and dependent child of a dependent child).

The Canadian citizen or permanent resident must be currently residing in Canada.

Spousal open work permit needs to be submitted separately and not with the submitted spousal application.

IRCC increasing the cost of living financial requirements for International Students:

Starting Jan 2024 cost of living financial requirements for study permits will be raised so that international students are financially prepared for life in Canada.

For 2024, a single applicant will need to show they have $20,635, in addition to their first year of tuition and travel costs. This change will apply to new study permit applications received on or after January 1, 2024.

IRCC provided an update on 3 temporary policies affecting international students:

IRCC provided an update on 3 temporary policies affecting international students that were all set to expire at the end of 2023, including the following:

1- The waiver on the 20-hour-per-week limit on the number of hours international students are allowed to work off campus while class is in session will be extended to April 30, 2024.

2- The facilitative measure that has allowed international students to count time spent studying online towards the length of a future post-graduation work permit, as long as it constitutes less than 50% of the program of study, will continue to be in place for students who begin a study program before September 1, 2024.

3- In response to labour market disruptions during the pandemic and post-pandemic recovery, a temporary policy was introduced on 3 occasions to provide an additional 18-month work permit to post-graduation work permit holders as their initial work permit was expiring.

However, this temporary policy will not be extended further.
